Because of wrong guidance, an athlete loses 210,000 RMB

On November 3, 2024, the Hangzhou Marathon finished with an unexpected turn. Near the finish line, a dramatic scene unfolded: due to what was likely a language communication barrier, on-site staff made an error in guiding the leading runners. This mistake caused the Ethiopian athlete, who was originally in first place, to be overtaken by the Kenyan runner, thus losing his chance at the championship.

Footage from the scene shows the Ethiopian runner in the lead, with the Kenyan competitor close behind. However, after being misdirected by staff, the Ethiopian runner took a wrong turn when he should have turned onto a specific route. Taking advantage of this, the Kenyan runner, who was following closely, quickly corrected his path, moved into the lead, and ultimately overtook the Ethiopian runner. The Kenyan athlete won the race with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds, while the Ethiopian runner, who had originally been in the lead, finished second just six seconds later. Notably, all top three times in the men’s marathon category set new records for the event.

According to public information, the Hangzhou Marathon offers increased prizes for the top three finishers if they break event records, with awards of $54,000, $24,000, and $12,000 USD for first, second, and third places, respectively. As a result, the Kenyan athlete will receive $54,000 (approximately 384,550 RMB), while the Ethiopian athlete will receive $24,000 (approximately 170,911 RMB). Due to the error made by event staff, the Ethiopian runner, who would have won the championship, lost out on more than 210,000 RMB in prize money.
