Zilliqa Implements Halving Mechanism for Mining RewardsThe Zilliqa network has implemented a halving mechanism for block rewards earned by miners, reducing mining rewards by half every month to align with the network’s shift to Proof-of-Stake with Zilliqa 2.0. This change was implemented in line with Zilliqa’s decentralised governance protocol. The relevant proposal was first published on the Zilliqa governance forum on September 24th, where it was discussed extensively amongst the community. On September 28th, the proposal was published for public voting, allowing gZIL holders to vote on whether it should be implemented. By the time voting closed on October 12th, more than 97% of voting power was in favour of implementing the halving mechanism.  Vote participation for this proposal was impressively high, with a quorum being reached just a few days after the proposal was first published for voting. The halving of mining rewards aligns with the ongoing development and future migration to Zilliqa 2.0, which will forgo Proof-of-Work in favour of a consensus built on Proof-of-Stake. Reducing Proof-of-Work incentives is a necessary component of this strategy that aligns the interests of miners and validators towards adopting PoS and aiding in a smooth transition. As mining becomes less profitable, miners will be encouraged to support PoS or participate in staking. They will continue to be rewarded for mining operations by the protocol until the transition to PoS occurs with the mainnet migration to Zilliqa 2.0. How the halving mechanism works The proposal outlines a halving of mining rewards for the months of October, November, and December 2024. Therefore, the total mining rewards for October would be reduced by 50%, with rewards issued after the implementation date being reduced further to retroactively reduce average rewards issued by 50%.In November, an additional adjustment would reduce rewards again by 50%, resulting in miners receiving 25% of the original reward amount. The third and final halving would occur in December, with miners receiving 12.5% of their original monthly reward amount. As this change is being implemented on October 14th, the halving of rewards must be implemented retroactively to account for the preceding days to which this proposal applies. Therefore, rewards for the remainder of October will be 22.25% of their original value. Rewards for November will be 20% of their original value and those in December will be 12.5% of their original amount. This retroactive implementation achieves an identical effect to the halving mechanism being implemented from the beginning of October, aligning with the specified outcome of the proposal. For more information, read the full proposal. Reallocating ZIL to the community The reduction in mining rewards will result in a surplus of ZIL tokens, which can be reallocated in various ways to benefit the ecosystem. These resources can be reallocated to strengthen network security by expanding the set of reputable validators, conducting audits, and other related measures. A portion of the surplus ZIL tokens may be allocated for community-driven investments, incentives, and development initiatives. This could give the Zilliqa community and gZIL holders the ability to help fund the applications and projects they most want to see deployed on the network. As we approach the migration to Zilliqa 2.0 and Proof-of-Stake, expect further updates on how the surplus ZIL unlocked from this halving mechanism will be reallocated to the community. Zilliqa Implements Halving Mechanism for Mining Rewards

The Zilliqa network has implemented a halving mechanism for block rewards earned by miners, reducing mining rewards by half every month to align with the network’s shift to Proof-of-Stake with Zilliqa 2.0.

How the halving mechanism works

The proposal outlines a halving of mining rewards for the months of October, November, and December 2024.

Reallocating ZIL to the community

The reduction in mining rewards will result in a surplus of ZIL tokens, which can be reallocated in various ways to benefit the ecosystem.

Zilliqa 2.0 and the Interoperable Future of BlockchainBlockchain technology has created a transformative industry of decentralised applications, redefining digital value and unlocking new use cases for everything from digital goods to data provenance. However, the industry has faced one significant challenge as it has matured: interoperability.  As different networks evolve independently, their inability to communicate with one another not only limits the potential of decentralised applications (dApps) but also the experience of their users - a perennial obstacle for those building on Web3. Zilliqa firmly believes that the future of blockchain lies in an interoperable framework where blockchains seamlessly interact to simplify the user experience and unlock more value for everyone from developers to businesses building Web3 apps. As we work on the upcoming Zilliqa 2.0 network upgrade, we are keeping interoperability and our vision for an interconnected, multi-chain future first in mind. A Network that’s Easy to Join and Build On At the core of Zilliqa’s mission for an interoperable blockchain future is Zilliqa 2.0, an EVM-compatible (Ethereum Virtual Machine) network designed for accessibility. The updated protocol brings Solidity support, making it easier for developers familiar with Ethereum’s ecosystem to build and deploy smart contracts on Zilliqa. Zilliqa 2.0’s improvements don't just make the network accessible to developers; they also tackle scalability and usability challenges that have plagued other blockchains. By integrating customisable x-shards, the network allows builders to shape the blockchain according to their unique needs, whether that means tweaking block times, privacy settings, or fee structures.  Additionally, Zilliqa 2.0 incorporates a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism for enhanced speed and energy efficiency, reducing block finality to mere seconds. This foundational structure supports a scalable and interoperable blockchain network that dApps on other chains can easily connect to and interact with, enjoying all the benefits of an efficient layer-1 while remaining connected to the EVM ecosystem. Creating a Universal Cross-Chain Broker Zilliqa 2.0 introduces a Universal Cross-Chain Broker (UCCB), an infrastructure solution that connects Zilliqa with other EVM-compatible networks.  The UCCB simplifies the process of plugging into different networks, allowing tokens, assets, and data to flow seamlessly between Zilliqa and other EVM networks, enabling developers to deploy applications that can interact with the broader Web3 ecosystem without needing to build from scratch on each individual network. This is more than just a technical upgrade; it’s a shift toward a future where isolated blockchains no longer need to exist in silos.  By fostering inter-blockchain communication, Zilliqa envisions a decentralised world where dApps can scale across networks, offering users more flexibility and applications richer functionality. Future Plans: The Roadmap to Interoperability Interoperability is not just a feature on the Zilliqa 2.0 roadmap - it’s a guiding principle. Zilliqa’s long-term vision includes partnerships beyond its immediate ecosystem to extend the reach of blockchain interoperability further.  With exciting plans to incorporate more cross-chain capabilities and explore collaborations with other prominent networks, Zilliqa aims to create a truly interconnected Web3 landscape. Future upgrades will continue to prioritise the seamless integration of Zilliqa with the wider Web3 space, enabling everything from cross-chain smart contracts to decentralised finance (DeFi) applications that span multiple platforms.  As Zilliqa moves forward with its ambitious roadmap, one thing is clear: the future of blockchain isn’t isolated - it’s interoperable. And Zilliqa is leading the way in making that future a reality.

Zilliqa 2.0 and the Interoperable Future of Blockchain

Blockchain technology has created a transformative industry of decentralised applications, redefining digital value and unlocking new use cases for everything from digital goods to data provenance.

A Network that’s Easy to Join and Build On

At the core of Zilliqa’s mission for an interoperable blockchain future is Zilliqa 2.0, an EVM-compatible (Ethereum Virtual Machine) network designed for accessibility.

Creating a Universal Cross-Chain Broker

Zilliqa 2.0 introduces a Universal Cross-Chain Broker (UCCB), an infrastructure solution that connects Zilliqa with other EVM-compatible networks.

Future Plans: The Roadmap to Interoperability

Interoperability is not just a feature on the Zilliqa 2.0 roadmap - it’s a guiding principle.

The release of Jasper is the first step on the roadmap for Zilliqa 2.0, each of which will see the network expanded with further functionality according to the protocol’s whitepaper. The Jasper proto-testnet introduces Zilliqa 2.0’s new Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, which delivers lightning-fast transactions at low cost, all while remaining energy efficient and capable of scaling to the needs of businesses and developers globally. This early version of the Zilliqa 2.0 network allows developers and validators to explore the new network's enhanced capabilities and experiment with running a validator node and earning rewards for helping to secure the network. The proto-testnet offers other foundational features such as EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatibility and support for Scilla smart contracts, and the network will continue to undergo active development as work progresses on Zilliqa 2.0. The Zilliqa tech team will work closely with developers and validators to discuss their feedback and mitigate the impact of any bugs or downtime they encounter when testing this early, proto-testnet version of the Zilliqa 2.0 network. Future milestones include the release of the Zilliqa 2.0 mainnet and the progressive introduction of features such as x-shards and smart accounts, which will deliver unprecedented customisation and accessibility.  A core feature of Zilliqa 2.0’s design is to be able to adapt to the scaling and security needs of the applications running on it, allowing businesses and developers to build on a platform that works for them while being seamlessly integrated with the global Web3 ecosystem and audience. Zilliqa 2.0’s simplicity and powerful customisation positions it as the ideal white-label solution for businesses looking to leverage the benefits of Web3. Whether a company or developer wants to launch their own digital assets, build decentralised applications (dApps), or create new digital experiences, Zilliqa 2.0 will provide the infrastructure to do so efficiently and at scale. Commenting on the release of the Jasper proto-testnet for Zilliqa 2.0, Zilliqa Head of Research Zoltan Fazekas said: “This launch marks a significant step forward in realising our vision for Zilliqa 2.0. The Jasper proto-testnet is not just a test environment – it’s the beginning of a new era in blockchain technology, where speed, efficiency, and user-friendliness converge. We invite developers and businesses to join us in exploring the possibilities of this groundbreaking network.” With the launch of Jasper, Zilliqa is calling on potential new validators worldwide to onboard and test the network as pioneers of Zilliqa 2.0. This is an opportunity to play a key role in the future of the network and earn sustainable rewards by contributing to its security and resilience. Developers and potential validators are encouraged to read the docs for Zilliqa 2.0 to get started with the Jasper proto-testnet. What Is Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)?Whether you've been in the Web3 space for years or are a newcomer to crypto, chances are you've heard of EVM. The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is a key technology at the heart of many popular blockchain networks, including our upcoming Zilliqa 2.0 network upgrade. As Zilliqa continues to expand its EVM compatibility and embrace native EVM execution, understanding this technology is crucial for anyone using or building dApps in the Web3 space. A Distributed Computer At its core, the Ethereum Virtual Machine acts as a distributed computer that runs on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks.  Think of the EVM as a global, decentralised processor that executes smart contracts and dApps on the blockchain. Each Ethereum node runs an instance of the EVM, enabling it to process transactions and execute smart contracts (pieces of functional code) on the blockchain. The EVM's design allows it to operate in a trustless environment, where no single entity controls the system. Instead, the network's consensus mechanism ensures that the EVM executes code as intended, making it a reliable platform for building decentralised applications. Solidity and Standards Like any computer that executes code, the EVM supports a programming language for its smart contracts. Solidity is the primary programming language used to write smart contracts on the EVM and is similar to JavaScript, making it popular and accessible to developers. Solidity is the most popular smart contract language in the blockchain space, meaning that those networks which are EVM compatible can far more easily tap a pool of Web3 talent and build interoperability with other EVM networks. The EVM also enforces a set of standards, particularly for fungible tokens (ERC-20) and non-fungible tokens (ERC-721). These standards are critical for ensuring interoperability between different dApps and tokens in the EVM ecosystem.  For example, the ERC-20 standard defines the rules for creating tokens that can be easily exchanged across different platforms and applications. This has been a driving force behind the widespread adoption of EVM and its ecosystem of dApps. Widespread adoption of EVM dApps The accessibility of Solidity and the adoption of EVM has led to a wide variety of dApps being built for this platform across multiple blockchains. MetaMask, one of the most popular Web3 wallets, supports EVM-compatible chains, allowing users to interact with dApps on Layer-1 (L1) and Layer-2 (L2) networks seamlessly.  This cross-chain compatibility is essential as it enables users to manage assets and execute transactions across different blockchain ecosystems without needing to switch wallets or learn new interfaces. Zilliqa as a Layer-1 EVM Network As blockchain technology evolves, the role of EVM in enabling interoperability becomes increasingly important. Layer-1 chains like Ethereum are foundational networks, while Layer-2 solutions offer scalability by processing transactions off the main Ethereum chain.  Zilliqa currently operates as a layer-1 network with EVM compatibility built on top of its original execution layer. With the launch of Zilliqa 2.0, we will deliver a layer-1 network with native EVM compatibility that can compete with layer-2 networks in terms of scalability.  This means EVM developers will easily be able to build on Zilliqa, and we will be able to seamlessly integrate our network with other EVM-compatible blockchains. Beyond taking an interoperable approach to EVM support, Zilliqa 2.0 is also poised to lead the charge in mass adoption of Web3, making the technology as easy to use and as accessible as the internet. Stay tuned to our blog and socials - we will soon take a deeper look at how EVM is deployed on Zilliqa and Zilliqa 2.0 will leverage EVM to unlock easier cross-chain transactions, more liquidity opportunities, and better interoperability.

What Is Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)?

Whether you've been in the Web3 space for years or are a newcomer to crypto, chances are you've heard of EVM.

The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is a key technology at the heart of many popular blockchain networks, including our upcoming Zilliqa 2.0 network upgrade.

Solidity is the most popular smart contract language in the blockchain space, meaning that those networks which are EVM compatible can far more easily tap a pool of Web3 talent and build interoperability with other EVM networks.

AMA Highlights - the Future of Real-World Assets With Brillion and ZilliqaOn August 1st, Zilliqa and Brillion hosted a live AMA to share and discuss the exciting potential of their recently announced partnership.  Brillion is a market-leading Web3 smart wallet that specialises in securely managing real-world assets (RWAs), and their vision of bridging the worlds of traditional and decentralised finance aligns with Zilliqa's goal of making Web3 as easy as possible. This collaboration will see Brillion serve as a trusted wallet partner to Zilliqa, with an initial focus on supporting the network’s requirements for enterprise-scale real-world asset tokenisation. Zilliqa is also part of Brillion's Early Adopter Programme, providing valuable feedback to help tailor the platform to the needs of layer-1 and layer-2 networks. Zilliqa CEO Matt Dyer and Head of Product Anton Agafonov were joined by Brillion CEO Nibras Stiebar-Bang and CPO Gantavya Sharma on X Spaces, where they explored this partnership and its context in the wider industry. Check out the highlights from the AMA session with Brillion and Zilliqa below: Buying a Horse and Partnering for Ease-of-Use Before diving into the partnership between Brillion and Zilliqa, Matt Dyer began by addressing Zilliqa's recent purchase of a racehorse, a unique moment in blockchain history that will raise eyebrows and awareness of Web3 on the racetrack. “I think from a real-world asset perspective, it's quite an exciting thing to have. It was something we did around a project that we have partnered with Racing League on called The Winners Circle, and a lot of the ethos of what we are trying to do there from an ownership and fan engagement perspective and offer more value back to fans of horse racing,” Matt said. “A big component of that is clearly ownership, and fractional ownership of horses is a great use case that resonates with the fans. Purchasing a horse and having a digital twin enables us to have a compelling activation from a marketing perspective.” He then moved on to the key aspects of Zilliqa’s partnership with Brillion and how it fits into Zilliqa’s strategy. “We're looking to be at the forefront of the blockchain technology space, and one of the ways to drive growth from a layer-one perspective is around strategic partnerships and those integrations to foster a healthy and sustainable ecosystem.” “As we move towards launching our Jasper proto-testnet and starting to onboard new participants into our ecosystem, it's become the right time to build partnerships like we are doing with Brillion,” Matt said. “User centricity is a key component for our strategy, and I know Brillion is all about abstracting the complexity from a wallet perspective. If you look at some of the other ventures in the Zilliqa Group such as MetaMinds in the luxury sector, the onboarding experience is key to that platform and it is important to have a partner that makes that experience as seamless as possible.” New financial opportunities and the hype around real-world assets Nibras Stiebar-Bang shared her excitement around how this partnership unlocks new opportunities for retail and business users in a way that is accessible to everyone. “At Brillion, our goal is that we want to make millions of users reach their financial goals, and how you do that in the future is to enable people to invest in more assets." "We really need to abstract away all complexity for the user. My vision is that I want a user to be able to come in and just tell us as a wallet provider they want to be able to invest in ZIL because they believe in the Zilliqa ecosystem," Nibras said. "Almost 90% of the people who want to enter crypto leave and they go to an exchange because it's just too hard. So how do we get them into the ecosystem, and how do we get them to understand what it is about and be part of this amazing community building that we have? I'm  happy that we have a layer-one such as Zilliqa to work with us to bring that to the world." When asked about the growing hype around real-world assets in the Web3 space, Anton Agafonov explained how Zilliqa and Brillion are poised to benefit from this:"We are very optimistic and positive on real-world assets coming to the Web3 world. We believe that this creates more transparency, more liquidity and lowers risk, especially with asset fragmentation. In the real world right now, there is a lot of friction, you have to find a broker and it is all regionalised - there are a lot of constraints." “We are eager to see the next step of tokenisation coming, the next wave where people can trade an abundance of real-world assets such as commodities, real estate, luxury goods, or financial instruments,” Anton said. “We believe that partners like Brillion will bring us the ease of use to deliver this value to the end-user while we provide the tokenisation and infrastructure that facilitates this functionality on the transaction level. We're looking forward to real-world assets gaining more momentum and delivering a similar experience as centralised trading today.” Growing B2B and B2C adoption with Zilliqa 2.0 The next questions covered how the partnership between Brillion and Zilliqa ties into the upcoming launch of Zilliqa 2.0, and how this complements Brillon’s wallet platform. "Zilliqa 2.0 is designed with user centricity first in mind. So how do we kind of drive that adoption?” Matt said. “If you take a look at what the likes of Avalanche are doing and getting some good traction in the real-world asset space, a lot of that is driven around the ability to subnet, and have your validation done on your own ecosystem while still using a public blockchain.” "With our new consensus and approach, Zilliqa 2.0 has that capability, so when you start to think about real-world asset opportunities where there may be a requirement to control your environment while maximising the capability of a public blockchain, we are very well positioned to offer a solution for that." he added. Nibras expanded on how Brillion’s platform could enable this adoption by offering an easy-to-use wallet platform running on Zilliqa 2.0. "What we are offering Zilliqa is what they in turn will then offer everyone building on top of them, which is an extremely easy to use and manageable wallet solution, so they in turn can then focus all the applications they want to build and don't have to stress about the wallet infrastructure.” "We will be that puzzle in the middle, helping everyone out and making sure that they know how to integrate it and how to work around it," Nibras said. The speakers fielded a range of questions across different topics throughout the AMA, giving more context about Zilliqa’s decision to buy a horse, as well as exploring subjects like multi-chain dApps and wallet security. New financial opportunities and the hype around real-world assets

Nibras Stiebar-Bang shared her excitement around how this partnership unlocks new opportunities for retail and business users in a way that is accessible to everyone.

“At Brillion, our goal is that we want to make millions of users reach their financial goals, and how you do that in the future is to enable people to invest in more assets."

Growing B2B and B2C adoption with Zilliqa 2.0

The next questions covered how the partnership between Brillion and Zilliqa ties into the upcoming launch of Zilliqa 2.0, and how this complements Brillon’s wallet platform.

"Zilliqa 2.0 is designed with user centricity first in mind. So how do we kind of drive that adoption?” Matt said.

Integration with Fireblocks Another highlight from June was the exciting announcement of Zilliqa’s integration with Fireblocks, unlocking new opportunities for institutional investment in the Zilliqa ecosystem. Fireblocks is the market-leading infrastructure provider for enterprise-grade digital asset management, and it has now added support for buying and selling ZIL on its platform.  This enables its high-profile institutional customers, which include the likes of Revolut, eToro, and Robinhood, to access the Zilliqa ecosystem and integrate support for ZIL into their platforms. With this announcement built on the expanded EVM compatibility of the Zilliqa network, the way is open for major investors and enterprises to get involved in the exciting and growing Zilliqa ecosystem. Read more about Fireblocks adding support for Zilliqa. Zilliqa Safe now available The last month saw several major partnerships and integrations aimed at delivering powerful and accessible tools to new and old users of the Zilliqa network. This was exemplified by the launch of Zilliqa Safe - bringing the industry-leading multi-signature EVM wallet solution to the Zilliqa network. Deployed in partnership with Protofire, Zilliqa Safe offers an accessible EVM multisig wallet that can be used by teams or individuals to add an extra layer of security to their assets by requiring multiple signers to authorise transactions. Multisig wallets can also aid asset recovery, as they allow multiple parties to hold keys to the same account, allowing access if one key is lost. This shared control ensures no single party has unilateral control, making fund management and recovery more secure in collaborative environments. Zilliqa Safe is now live at safe.zilliqa.com. To read more about the launch of Zilliqa Safe and learn how to set up a wallet, read our post on the Zilliqa blog.  Concentrated Liquidity with PlunderSwap V3 On the DeFi front, the Zilliqa network saw a massive announcement last month with the launch of PlunderSwap V3, bringing concentrated liquidity to the first EVM decentralised exchange (DEX) on Zilliqa. Concentrated liquidity allows providers to allocate liquidity to a specific price range, incentivising the allocation of liquidity to reasonable price ranges while allowing providers’ capital to remain more active. When using the new Exchange V3 on PlunderSwap, users will receive both Liquidity Provider NFTs and a share of the pool's fees when they allocate funds to a price range. These NFTs represent liquidity positions and can be transferred to other EVM wallets on the Zilliqa network. This means that not only can liquidity providers enjoy more efficient rewards, but they can also trade their positions with others in a decentralised way. Learn more about PlunderSwap V3 in the platform’s documentation or get started by visiting the official website. AMAs and ecosystem news In other ecosystem news, last month saw the announcement of the Zilliqa 2.0 roadmap expanded by brief explanations of the upcoming features of the innovative new blockchain. Zoltan Fazekas, our Head of Research, shared more about what to expect in the upcoming Jasper release of the protocol, which will include the first implementation of the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism used by Zilliqa 2.0. It was also an exciting month for Web3War, the free-to-play Skill2Earn FPS developed by Roll1ng Thund3rz, which launched a “Play to AirDrop” campaign ahead of the launch of the game’s next major seasonal content update. Several lucky Web3War players were also able to get early access to Season 2 of Web3War, which is now live for all users. You can find the full release notes on the official website. In a move that aligns with the decentralisation of the Zilliqa network and builds a healthier and less concentrated network topology, one of the biggest stakers on the Zilliqa network moved their stake to Luganodes’s enterprise-grade staking services. Decentralisation and the onboarding of new stakers is a major consideration for the Zilliqa network as we approach the launch of Zilliqa 2.0, as with a new Proof-of-Stake consensus comes the need to onboard validators and the exciting opportunity to earn rewards based on effective incentives. In other ecosystem news, last month saw the announcement of the Zilliqa 2.0 roadmap expanded by brief explanations of the upcoming features of the innovative new blockchain.

Zilliqa 2.0 - the Blockchain Tailored to Your ImaginationThe whitepaper for Zilliqa 2.0 has been officially published, detailing the design for an innovative, cutting-edge blockchain protocol that is designed to offer builders and brands unparalleled ease of use and customisability. An evolution of Zilliqa’s original and pioneering sharding technology that combines peer-reviewed blockchain research with an industry-tested, multi-chain approach, this comprehensive upgrade to the Zilliqa network promises a unique way to build in Web3 that is easier and more scalable than ever before. Zilliqa 2.0 aims to deliver a number of key technical features, including customisable and scalable x-shards, smart accounts, light client support, and built-in infrastructure for cross-chain communication. These technical components will be tested and rolled out as described in the Zilliqa 2.0 roadmap, beginning with the testnet launch of the updated network and its fully Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Whilst each of these foundational pillars is an impressive solution independently, it is when they are combined into a holistic tech stack the overarching vision for a forward-thinking breed of blockchain emerges. Let’s take a look at how these disparate parts stitch together to create the vision behind Zilliqa 2.0: A blockchain you can shape as you imagine The whitepaper for the Zilliqa 2.0 protocol upgrade begins by addressing one of the biggest problems in the blockchain industry - the lack of useability. Conventionally, blockchain protocols have been designed to be rigid and inflexible, forcing all transactions to compete for the same block space and to adhere to the same fee structure for data processing. This delivers a reliable and secure protocol, yet one that cannot be optimised for multiple applications. The whitepaper highlights this problem directly, noting that “just as there is no ideal computing infrastructure that satisfies the needs of all centralised information systems, there exists no single chain that can perfectly fulfil the requirements of all decentralised use cases”. To address this challenge, Zilliqa 2.0 offers a cutting-edge sharding architecture in addition to its mainnet that comprises multiple customisable chains that can be shaped to meet the needs of specific applications or brands. These x-shards are independent whilst also interconnected, each built upon and interlinked with the secure, reliable, and scalable Zilliqa 2.0 mainnet yet capable of being customised extensively depending on the user’s vision. X-shards allow businesses and developers to build exactly what they imagine on the Zilliqa network while choosing or creating an x-shard that is best suited to their technical needs. X-shards communicate seamlessly with each other and the Zilliqa mainnet, making the transfer of assets and application data across each chain quick and straightforward. With the introduction of x-shards, Zilliqa 2.0 delivers the first blockchain platform that allows you to select a Web3 infrastructure that is tailored to your needs, whether that means using a bridged native token, bespoke gas fees, customised privacy, or even different validators. Zilliqa 2.0 gives you the ability to shape the blockchain you imagine and without limitations, unlocking an intuitive and differentiated approach to Web3 infrastructure that is designed to scale for mass adoption. Making Web3 as easy to use as the internet Giving users the ability to customise the blockchain according to their needs is one of the many ways Zilliqa 2.0 aims to make Web3 more accessible, intuitive, and easy to use for developers, companies, and end-users. Through a suite of exciting changes and its latest powerful network components, Zilliqa 2.0 will deliver the blockchain platform that makes Web3 as easy to use and understand as Web2. Whether you are making a purchase on a Web3-enabled application or building a tokenisation platform for a major brand, Zilliqa 2.0 is designed to make this process as simple and efficient as possible.  The network’s new Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism will see a drastic improvement in block times, which means transactions are executed in a matter of seconds at even significantly lower fees. Smart accounts will also enable a host of usability improvements, including introducing subsidised gas fees, which means Web3 apps can assume the process of paying for transactions to create a smoother onboarding process for end-users. Smart accounts will also unlock major quality-of-life improvements such as the ability to secure your account with social media credentials, whitelist addresses, and much more. With light clients, customers will be able to securely interact with the network using devices with very low resource requirements instead of relying on third-party node providers. And Zilliqa 2.0’s built-in cross-chain communication infrastructure will make it easy to bridge tokens from other blockchains or use multi-chain applications, linking Zilliqa’s network extensively to the wider EVM ecosystem. Each of these features and many more described in the Zilliqa 2.0 whitepaper are designed first and foremost to remove friction from the user experience and create the opportunity for mainstream adoption of Web3 by businesses and customers, while also making building on blockchain a simple and rewarding experience for developers. The vision for Zilliqa 2.0 is to deliver a cutting-edge and market-leading blockchain protocol that makes the entire Web3 experience as easy as using the internet - and one that you can shape as you imagine.

Zilliqa 2.0 - the Blockchain Tailored to Your Imagination

The whitepaper for Zilliqa 2.0 has been officially published, detailing the design for an innovative, cutting-edge blockchain protocol that is designed to offer builders and brands unparalleled ease of use and customisability.

Let’s take a look at how these disparate parts stitch together to create the vision behind Zilliqa 2.0:

A blockchain you can shape as you imagine

The whitepaper for the Zilliqa 2.0 protocol upgrade begins by addressing one of the biggest problems in the blockchain industry - the lack of useability.

Making Web3 as easy to use as the internet

Giving users the ability to customise the blockchain according to their needs is one of the many ways Zilliqa 2.0 aims to make Web3 more accessible, intuitive, and easy to use for developers, companies, and end-users.

6 Massive Changes Revealed in the Zilliqa 2.0 WhitepaperThe whitepaper and roadmap for Zilliqa 2.0 have been officially unveiled, outlining the evolution of the network towards a fast, efficient, and easy-to-use blockchain that adapts to its users’ needs. An extensive evolution of the Zilliqa protocol, Zilliqa 2.0 brings a number of landmark changes that cement its position as a technical heavyweight in the Web3 space.  Combining best practices and interoperable standards with revolutionary new approaches to scaling and consensus, Zilliqa 2.0 sits at the cutting edge of blockchain development while also focusing squarely on accessibility and making using Web3 as straightforward as the traditional Internet. Whether you’ve already read through the Zilliqa 2.0 whitepaper and want to learn more, or you simply want an overview of the important changes coming in the new network, there are six headline features you need to know about. Let’s take a look at the six powerful features coming in Zilliqa 2.0: X-Shards: Shape the blockchain to your needs One of the unique features of Zilliqa 2.0 is its exciting new sharding architecture. Building on Zilliqa’s pioneering sharding technology, Zilliqa 2.0 features a game-changing evolution of this innovative approach to blockchain scaling: X-shards. Shards are different but interconnected instances of the same blockchain protocol that improve scalability by processing transactions in parallel, and X-shards expand this approach to offer a far more customisable and interoperable experience. Put simply, X-shards are blockchains built on top of Zilliqa 2.0 that can be customised according to the needs of the apps and users operating on it. They can be set up to use stablecoins as their native token, offer cheaper transactions, deliver user privacy through encrypted transactions, or even use an alternative consensus model. X-shards allow developers to shape the blockchain to their needs, and give users the ability to use apps across different X-shards and the Zilliqa 2.0 mainnet seamlessly, with the ability to communicate and transact across shards built into the protocol. Read more about X-shards and the customisable future of blockchain. Proof-of-Stake Consensus: Fast, low-cost, and energy-efficient With the migration to Zilliqa 2.0 comes a shift to a faster, more efficient consensus mechanism that replaces the previous Proof-of-Work model with Proof-of-Stake.  Zilliqa 2.0 will feature a consensus mechanism where validators use tokens instead of computing power to secure the network, staking ZIL to justify the validity of transactions. Not only is this a far faster and less expensive way to process transactions, it also saves on the unnecessarily high energy consumption incurred by Proof-of-Work consensus. The shift to Proof-of-Stake with Zilliqa 2.0 will also bring a massive performance boost, delivering up to 30-times faster block times and 10-times faster finality compared with Zilliqa 1.0’s consensus mechanism.  Zilliqa 2.0’s consensus model will allow everyone to play a role in securing the network, with all validators and delegators being rewarded according to the amount of ZIL they stake. Learn more about the ultra-fast, energy-efficient consensus used in Zilliqa 2.0. Cross-chain Communication: Plugged into other networks Interoperability and cross-chain communication is a core feature of Zilliqa 2.0, with the groundwork for this strategy being laid in the recent introduction of native EVM compatibility to the Zilliqa 1.0 network. EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) is the software platform used to build decentralised applications on Ethereum and other major protocols, including Zilliqa. EVM compatibility remains a key focus with Zilliqa 2.0, with the protocol now designed for simple and easy transactions across compatible blockchains. The native ZIL token on Zilliqa 2.0 can be traded as a fungible token across other networks and EVM applications, unlocking access to the global multi-chain dApp ecosystem. This is further enhanced by the ability to easily conduct atomic swaps and deploy cross-chain bridges using the new Universal Cross-Chain Broker deployed on Zilliqa 2.0. This built-in bridge infrastructure gives you the ability to easily bridge tokens and applications built on Zilliqa 2.0 to other EVM networks, marking a leap forward for the interoperability and accessibility of the blockchain. Read more about easy and efficient cross-chain transactions on Zilliqa 2.0. Smart Accounts: Making Web3 as easy as Web2 While it competes with the most technically advanced protocols in the Web3 space, Zilliqa 2.0 is designed with ease-of-use first in mind. The network is built to support a number of powerful capabilities that make it easier for users and developers to interact and build on the blockchain. Zilliqa 2.0 will feature smart accounts, blockchain accounts with built-in support for advanced features that can unlock everything from powerful new transaction types or significantly improved user experiences. Importantly, these smart accounts can remove the friction and complexity that is now synonymous with Web3. With smart accounts, users can sign in with their social media credentials instead of a private key. They can pay gas fees using fungible assets without having to purchase native tokens, or they can prevent accidental transfers to the wrong addresses. Smart accounts are implemented on Zilliqa 2.0 via native account abstraction that supports the ERC-4337 standard, and they are backwards-compatible, meaning Zilliqa 1.0 accounts can be seamlessly upgraded with this extended functionality. Read more about smart accounts and ease-of-use on Zilliqa 2.0. Light Clients: Secure, decentralised ways to use Zilliqa Another core feature of the Zilliqa 2.0 network is built-in support for light clients, lightweight nodes that can trustlessly interact with the blockchain without needing to store the entire history of transactions. Introducing light clients with Zilliqa 2.0 unlocks the opportunity to create a more decentralised network, where private keys and wallets can be truly owned by their users and non-custodial applications can be efficiently deployed on the network. Unlike full Zilliqa 2.0 nodes which must store the full digital ledger, light clients store only a chain of block headers which they verify independently. This means they can run on lightweight hardware without the need to offload custody to centralised parties. Light clients allow you to manage assets or interact with multi-chain applications directly from your smartphone, without ever handing your keys to anyone. Read more about how light clients drive the security and decentralisation of Zilliqa 2.0. Tokenomics: Sustainable economy with attractive rewards Finally, Zilliqa 2.0 comes with a major overhaul to the network’s token economy, with changes to both its consensus mechanism and rewards distribution. The tokenomics of Zilliqa 2.0 are designed to deliver a sustainable future for the ZIL token while also offering attractive rewards for the validators that help secure the network. To ensure the long-term health of its token economy, Zilliqa 2.0 will reduce inflation through an automatic balancing of the amount of ZIL awarded to validators and the amount burned in transaction processing.Zilliqa 2.0’s tokenomics are built to be future-proof and sustainable while ensuring that validators enjoy attractive incentives and are rewarded for their role.  This approach, paired with the existing utility of gZIL in network governance and the groundbreaking ability to create additional token economies through customisable x-shards, places Zilliqa 2.0 among the most attractive networks for staking. Learn more about the ultra-fast, energy-efficient consensus used in Zilliqa 2.0.

Cross-chain Communication: Plugged into other networks

Interoperability and cross-chain communication is a core feature of Zilliqa 2.0, with the groundwork for this strategy being laid in the recent introduction of native EVM compatibility to the Zilliqa 1.0 network.

Smart Accounts: Making Web3 as easy as Web2

While it competes with the most technically advanced protocols in the Web3 space, Zilliqa 2.0 is designed with ease-of-use first in mind.

Light Clients: Secure, decentralised ways to use Zilliqa

Another core feature of the Zilliqa 2.0 network is built-in support for light clients, lightweight nodes that can trustlessly interact with the blockchain without needing to store the entire history of transactions.

Tokenomics: Sustainable economy with attractive rewards

Finally, Zilliqa 2.0 comes with a major overhaul to the network’s token economy, with changes to both its consensus mechanism and rewards distribution.

Introducing Zilliqa 2.0 - Shaping a Decentralised FutureWe are delighted to officially unveil the whitepaper and roadmap for Zilliqa 2.0, the upcoming comprehensive upgrade to the Zilliqa network that will deploy on mainnet later this year. Zilliqa 2.0 marks a paradigm shift for the Zilliqa network, bringing a major evolution that reworks the mechanics of the blockchain protocol at a foundational level. These enhancements are being developed in line with the project’s goal of delivering a fast, scalable, decentralised, and secure blockchain that is easy to use and uncompromising in its flexibility. After a significant period in internal development, we are pleased to finally share all the exciting features coming in Zilliqa 2.0, and we appreciate all the support we received from the Zilliqa community as we worked to reach this point. The whitepaper and roadmap for Zilliqa 2.0 have been published, and both are now available on the Zilliqa 2.0 roadmap website, which also includes a breakdown of several core features that will come with this exciting new version of the Zilliqa blockchain. Read the whitepaper and roadmap for Zilliqa 2.0. While the roadmap describes our plan for rolling out and publicly testing key features of Zilliqa 2.0 ahead of the full rollout of all features available in the new blockchain protocol, it should be noted that the timeline for implementation will depend on the success of feature testing. That said, our goal is to migrate the mainnet chain to the new blockchain protocol, Zilliqa 2.0, by the end of this year. The mainnet migration to Zilliqa 2.0 will be accomplished in a way that preserves all historical account states and will not disrupt any actively maintained dApps running on the network. Designed for efficiency, scalability and ease-of-use The uniquely innovative feature delivered by the launch of Zilliqa 2.0 is x-shards, a new sharding architecture that offers unprecedented scalability through flexible customisation. These sovereign, application-specific x-shards build on the core principles of Zilliqa’s first, pioneering approach to sharding while allowing them to be customised extensively according to the needs of the apps that are running on them.  X-shards allow businesses and developers to build exactly what they want on the Zilliqa network while choosing or creating an x-shard that is best suited to their needs. X-shards communicate seamlessly with each other and the Zilliqa mainnet, making the transfer of assets and application data across them quick and straightforward. Not only does Zilliqa 2.0 introduce a one-of-a-kind sharding architecture, but it also brings a new Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism and powerful tools for cross-chain communication. Zilliqa 2.0 will see the network shift from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake, adopting a new consensus mechanism that delivers ultra-fast finality while being more lightweight and energy efficient.  Block times can be tweaked as desired for every x-shard, but with Zilliqa 2.0 the root mainnet shard will now feature average block times of as low as 2 seconds, cementing the overhauled network’s position amongst the fastest in the industry. The network overhaul will also add a cross-chain communication hub that facilitates easy communication between x-shards, the Zilliqa mainnet, and other EVM-compatible blockchains. This opens the door to accessible multi-chain applications and bridges, plugging Zilliqa 2.0 into the wider ecosystem of EVM networks. Zilliqa 2.0 is designed with native EVM support, allowing it to run smart contracts written in languages such as Solidity and work with popular wallets like MetaMask. The network will retain support for Scilla and feature full interoperability between the two contract languages. Other exciting features coming with the launch of Zilliqa 2.0 include an EVM-compatible implementation of account abstraction, which enables smart account functionality and the ability to use paymasters to facilitate token conversions for gas fees. The tokenomics of the network will also be adjusted to account for the shift to Proof-of-Stake and to offer attractive but sustainable rewards to stakers that will reduce inflation to ensure a healthy token economy. As we continue to work towards the milestones outlined in our roadmap, keep an eye on the official roadmap website for updates and more information on the exciting capabilities that are coming in Zilliqa 2.0.
