đš Crypto Hacks Steal $460M in Q3 2024 Hackers made off with $460 million from 28 exploits in Q3 2024, marking one of the smallest losses in three years. Yet, with only 5% of funds recovered, the quarter saw the lowest recovery rate since 2021, according to Hackenâs cybersecurity report. Biggest Threat: Access Control Exploits Access control hacks were the most damaging, accounting for nearly 70% of all losses ($316 million). Attackers took over smart contract keys to manipulate funds and upgrade proxy contracts, leading to devastating withdrawals. Vulnerabilities in smart contracts, like reentrancy attacks, also caused major losses, draining liquidity pools in a single transaction. The biggest hit? WazirX, an Indian exchange, lost over $230 million when its Ethereum multisig wallet was compromised. This exploit sparked inside job suspicions, as no security breaches were found despite an independent audit. Although cross-chain bridges and yield aggregators were targeted less frequently, they still endured major losses. However, a white-hat MEV bot managed to recover funds from a Ronin Bridge exploit before the hacker completed the attack. Could These Hacks Have Been Prevented? Hacken estimates 28.7% of losses in DeFi couldâve been avoided with automated incident response systems. The Automated Incident Response Strategy can pause contracts and freeze funds upon suspicious activity, potentially mitigating the aftermath of large-scale attacks. Examples like the Nexera exploit, where a scammer drained $1.5 million, show that such preventive systems couldâve saved millions. As the crypto space evolves, so must its security infrastructure. What's your opinion on the potential solution with freezing funds during suspicious activity? Smart move? đš Telegram OUTAGE - App Taken Over By French Feds? Telegram users across multiple countries have reported major outages, starting around 10:30 AM UTC on Oct. 3. Affected users are experiencing issues with sending/receiving messages and server connection problems, according to Downdetector. Impacted were: Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Kazakhstan, Russia, Netherlands, Germany. Users in these regions report difficulty loading new messages, with some Reddit users confirming the platform has been down for over an hour. This follows a smaller outage on Oct. 2 and a larger one back in June that lasted 1.5 hours. Outage reports continue to flood in, but so far, Telegram and CEO Pavel Durov have remained silent on the matter. Growing Concern: Telegram is no stranger to connection issues, with previous outages causing disruption for its 700+ million users worldwide. Many rely on the platform, especially in crypto communities, for real-time communication and updates. The frequency of these outages is raising concerns about platform reliability. Meanwhile, Durov is still under investigation in France, facing charges linked to illicit activities on the platform. Some speculate that this could be adding pressure to the companyâs operations. Why this is VERY BAD NEWS - Let's break it down: - Durov got arrested after getting invited to France and is still under investigation - France said the arrest was not political, shortly after multiple countries threatened to ban Telegram (really not political?) - The app receives major outages while Durov is in custody If you add 1+1, it would almost seem that Telegram was infiltrated, and Durov is being held hostage until he gives up enough resources to the government(s). If this is the case, we all should fear the future, because TYRANNY is alive and well! đšBREAKING: SEC Files Appeal in Ripple Lawsuit! The SEC has officially filed an appeal in its long-standing case against Ripple Labs, seeking to overturn the pivotal 2023 ruling that declared secondary sales of XRP do not constitute securities. This move comes as no surprise to legal experts who expected the SEC to challenge Judge Analisa Torres' decision, which was a landmark victory for Ripple and the entire crypto industry. Whatâs at Stake? In her ruling, Judge Torres determined that XRP itself is not a security, as it failed to meet all the conditions under the Howey Test. However, early institutional sales by Rippleâs founders were deemed securities sales, which created a mixed result. Now, the SEC is aiming to overturn the decision on secondary market sales, a critical point for Rippleâs broader market presence. Rippleâs Winâand Whatâs Next The initial ruling was celebrated across the crypto space as a major win, particularly for projects under regulatory scrutiny. But with the SECâs appeal, the next phase of this legal saga will shape the future of crypto regulation in the U.S. Big Changes at the SEC On the same day as the appeal, Gubir Grewal, the SECâs controversial chief enforcement officer, announced his resignation, set for Oct. 11. Known for his aggressive enforcement in the crypto sector, his departure could signal potential shifts in the SECâs strategy moving forward. Sanjay Wadhwa, the current deputy, will step in as the interim chief. XRP ETF on the Horizon? Meanwhile, Bitwise has filed for an XRP ETF trust in Delaware, hinting at growing institutional interest in the token. However, the SECâs legal appeal could delay its approval, leaving the XRP ETF in limbo. đ OpenAI Raises $6.6B at $157B Valuation In an astonishing leap, OpenAI just raised $6.6 billion in fresh capital, catapulting its valuation to a jaw-dropping $157 billion! Heavyweights like Microsoft, Nvidia, Thrive Capital, and Khosla Ventures backed the latest round. But thatâs not all: OpenAI is eyeing a radical shift from nonprofit to a fully for-profit model, aiming to ditch profit caps and soar higher than ever. The Plan: OpenAIâs convertible debt strategy could flip into equity if its for-profit transformation clears regulatory hurdles. However, Elon Musk has slammed this move, calling it âillegal,â as questions arise over the legality of restructuring a nonprofit into a profit-focused giant. But California laws seem to allow thisâthrough a complex conversion to a for-profit stock corporation or LLC. Whatâs Next? To justify this sky-high valuation, OpenAI is rolling out ambitious high-end subscriptions, with plans possibly priced at $2,000/month. The AI leader is now serving over 1 million users, a mind-blowing 67% increase since April 2024. Upgrades Galore! As if that werenât enough, OpenAI just supercharged ChatGPT with vision and speech capabilities. The AI can now process images better and engage in voice-to-voice conversations, mimicking natural speech. Developers, get ready for a smoother ride with the Realtime API, making AI applications smarter and more responsive. The future of AI is hereâand itâs moving faster than ever! đš How North Korea Infiltrated the Crypto Industry An investigation has revealed that North Korean IT workers have infiltrated the crypto industry, posing as developers to secure remote jobs at over a dozen prominent blockchain companies. These undercover operatives were hired by firms including Injective, ZeroLend, Fantom, Sushi, Yearn Finance, and Cosmos Hubâmany of which unknowingly employed workers from North Korea (DPRK), violating U.S. and U.N. sanctions. North Korean IT workers used fake IDs and falsified documents to pass interviews and background checks. Many of these workers were hired for remote roles, often using anonymous methods, which made it easier for them to blend in. They successfully masked their origins, presenting real work histories and GitHub contributions. Zaki Manian, a blockchain developer, revealed that more than 50% of incoming resumes in the crypto industry may come from DPRK workers. CoinDesk identified over a dozen companies that had unwittingly hired North Korean developers since 2018. Many of these companies, like Cosmos Hub, have publicly acknowledged the issue for the first time through this investigation. Hiring North Korean workers is illegal under U.N. and U.S. sanctions, but many companies fell victim to elaborate identity fraud. Worse, CoinDesk found links between DPRK IT workers and hacking incidents. For example, Sushi, a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, lost $3 million in a 2021 hack linked to these workers. These IT workers send their earnings back to Pyongyang to support the regimeâs nuclear weapons program, with as much as $600 million annually funneled to the regime. The funds were traced back to DPRK government-linked blockchain addresses, according to U.S. authorities and blockchain payment records. Crazy story, right?
