Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a newly established special administrative region in Bhutan, has announced plans to incorporate digital assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and BNB into its strategic reserves. This initiative positions GMC among the first regions globally to officially recognize digital assets as part of their strategic reserves, aiming to enhance economic resilience and continue exploration in the field of Bitcoin mining.
In addition, GMC plans to host a high-level conference in March 2025 in Bhutan, inviting global government officials and industry leaders to discuss the significance of including digital assets in strategic reserves. There are also plans to establish an International Digital Asset Advisory Committee.
GMC's decision to include digital assets in its reserves reflects its focus on blockchain technology and technological innovation. The region has been proactive in adopting progressive digital asset ecosystems, following the enactment of GMC Law No. 1 of 2024, which promotes a regulated yet forward-thinking approach to digital assets.
This move is part of Bhutan's broader efforts to diversify its economy and create opportunities for its youth, while maintaining its commitment to mindfulness and environmental sustainability. GMC aims to foster innovation and economic development, organized around seven key economic clusters: Spirituality, Health and Wellness, Education and Knowledge, Green Energy and Technology, Finance and Digital Assets, Agri-Tech and Forestry, and Aviation and Logistics.
