Google reportedly plans to invest an additional $2 billion in AI company Anthropic, following its initial $500 million investment. The remaining $1.5 billion will be paid over time. The investment comes after Google Cloud struck a multi-year deal with Anthropic worth more than $3 billion. Anthropic, a rival of OpenAI, aims to train its AI systems, including AI assistant Claude, in hopes of achieving a breakthrough in the AI ââindustry. OpenAI, meanwhile, has received more than $13 billion in funding from Microsoft since 2019 and continues to develop advanced versions of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Anthropic co-founders Dario and Daniela Amodei previously worked at OpenAI but left in 2021 due to disputes over security implications. Before investments from Google and Amazon, Anthropic was largely funded by former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
