Vitalik Buterin is setting some ambitious goals for Ethereum's development roadmap, and one of the most exciting is running Ethereum directly on smart devices like watches!

In recent updates regarding the project "The Verge," Vitalik has emphasized two key objectives aimed at enhancing the Ethereum ecosystem:

  1. Stateless clients: This solution aims to drastically reduce the storage needs for nodes, allowing participants to verify and stake on Ethereum with just a few gigabytes of storage, instead of downloading hundreds of gigabytes of data as required today.

  2. Verification on smartwatches: Ethereum's future will enable the verification of the entire chain, including both consensus and execution, with only a small amount of data, thanks to SNARK technology.

Why is this simplification important?

Simplifying the verification process will make it easier for more people to run nodes, increasing both decentralization and security of the network. Currently, due to high storage and computational demands, running a node is challenging for most users. With these improvements, even devices like smartwatches could participate in securing the network.

How will Ethereum change?

The Verge is focused on making verification much easier, utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as Verkle trees and STARKs. These technologies allow nodes to verify transactions without needing to store the entire dataset, saving significant resources and processing time.

Although there’s still a long way to go in development, if successful, Ethereum will evolve into a more robust decentralized platform, where anyone can participate in securing the network with just a compact device in hand.
