The SEC has taken action against romance scammers for the first time, charging two allegedly fake crypto exchanges with carrying out fraud.
The United States Securities and Exchange Commission says it has taken its first-ever action against crypto âpig butcheringâ scammers, charging two allegedly âfake crypto asset trading platforms.â
The SEC sued five entities and three people it said were connected to the alleged fake exchanges NanoBit and CoinW6, accusing them of stealing nearly $3.2 million after gaining investorsâ trust and pursuing relationships with them via social media, according to a Sept. 17 statement.
âThese charges are the SECâs first enforcement actions alleging these types of scams,â the SEC added.
âIn these two cases, we allege that fraudsters created fake crypto ecosystems that displayed false information to investors,â said the SECâs Division of Enforcement director Gurbir Grewal.
Today we charged multiple entities and individuals in connection with two relationship investment scams involving fake crypto asset trading platforms NanoBit and CoinW6, respectively.
Grewal added the threat of such relationship investment scams âis increasing rapidly as these scams become more popular with fraudsters,â with the cases a reminder âto be on heightened alertâ about investments promoted by strangers online.

The SEC sued CoinW6 on Sept. 17 in a California federal court, alleging it perpetrated a scheme with âa web of individualsâ passing as âyoung, attractive professionalsâ who defrauded at least 11 investors out of over $2.2 million.

Ledger Live Users Lose $600,000 In Bitcoin: Report
In a November 5 post on the X (formerly Twitter) platform, ZachXBT raised an alarm on the suspicious application, âLedger Live Web3â, which is conning users into thinking they are installing the original âLedger Liveâ app. The original Ledger Live is a user interface app that allows hardware wallet users to store their crypto assets offline.
According to on-chain data, roughly 16,800 BTC (worth approximately $588,000) has been received by the exploiter across 38 different transactions using the wallet address âbc1qâŠy64qâ. The first set of funds (an estimated total of $87,600) were transferred to the scammerâs address on October 24, 2023.

I turned to MEXC Exchange because of its variety of cryptocurrencies. However, after some usage, I discovered that the exchange has a fake order book. When you attempt to execute a buy or sell order at the market price shown in the order book, youâll find that all the orders in the queue suddenly disappear, leaving your order incomplete.
Even if you select an order from the opposite side of the queue to fill your order, the same issue occurs. My advice is to avoid using this exchange, as you will be forced to trade cryptocurrencies with at least a 2% spread .
