1,314 Bitcoin mining rigs confiscated in Indonesia
During the Christmas weekend, Indonesian authorities conducted raids at 10 locations. These people are suspected of carrying out illegal Bitcoin mining activities powered by electricity stolen from the national grid.
Although Indonesia is increasingly involved in the cryptocurrency sector, the country is still not recognized as a major mining center.
The crackdown poses a new challenge for authorities because electricity theft is considered a criminal offense in Indonesia. It is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of twice the value of unpaid electricity bills.
Electricity theft in the Indonesian cryptocurrency landscape
While Indonesia has been quick to adopt cryptocurrencies in recent years, mining activities have not been a focus until the recent crackdown. Soaring cryptocurrency prices could attract more individuals into mining operations, increasing the risk of electricity theft.
Details of raids
During raids in Medan, authorities discovered 1,314 Bitcoin mining rigs. This further resulted in the detention of 26 individuals suspected of being involved in illegal activities.
The suspects allegedly stole electricity by touching electricity poles owned by state electricity company PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara) over the past six months. This illegal use caused about 14.4 billion Indonesian rupees ($100,000) in damage to the state. #BTC🔥🔥
